Why do we see such detailed and fantastic sculpture from ancient history through to the Renaissance, and yet as recently as the medieval era, illustrators seemingly couldn’t draw people any better than a toddler.

Question in title, mainly referencing the crazy disparity in artwork like the bayeux tapestry and a lot of other 11th century medieval artwork Vs Greek sculpture and carvings. It seems two dimensional mediums took a lot longer than sculpture

I’m pretty sure the medieval era was before the renaissance. And the Romans cared a lot for art and had the means and time to do so. After the Roman Empire abandoned Europe, they struggled. And when you’re more focused on finding food, you don’t sculpt as much. Also the education fell a lot after the Romans fell too so I assume that would add to it.
