Why do we slowly inhale before a sneeze?

If there is something in your nasal passage, you do not want to violently inhale because there is a chance you will suck that thing further down or even into your lungs. The body slowly inhales so as to gather enough air to sneeze but not suck down further whatever needs to be sneezed.

You can’t violently exhale to clear your airways without first gathering up enough air to actually do it.

Sneezing and good, solid coughing first requires a good deep breath – much deeper than the typical shallow breathing you do most of the time that doesn’t turn over the entire lung volume.
