When you close your eyes to concentrate you are cutting the distractions. Holding your breath is just an extension of that. Quieting yourself to listen. Not everyone does it, but it’s a left over from a more savage time.

You’re shutting down internal apps to increase your processing power.

Same thing that causes people to close their eyes when they lie. My son couldn’t lie for crap because he couldn’t keep his eyes open when he lied.
