Why do we use 44,1 kHz frequency on CDs while we’re only being able to hear up to 20 kHz?

The sample rate is 44,100 samples per second, not 44.1 kHz. It’s a distinction of terminology that’s very important. All the other comments explain the Nyquist frequency, but fail to use the correct term for the sample rate.
