Why do we wretch/vomit when exposed to something unsettling? Whether that be something physical or a shocking emotion?

Why do we wretch when exposed to certain bad smells? Is it some sort of defence mechanism? And similarly, why is it common to vomit when we’re shocked?

Someone might be able to explain it better but:

When fight or flight mode is activated, it can’t worry about wasting extra energy on digestion – it gets expelled so it can use every little bit it can for the run ahead or battle to come.
