Usually it’s damage to the nail bed; you bumped your finger or something and it’s kind of the nail;s equivalent of a ‘bruise’.
It if happens regularly with no clear cause, might be a vitamin deficiency, particularly zinc.
Leukonychia due to injuries or calcium or zinc deficiency, normally they are an indicator of health problems.
