Why do yawns start a chain reaction of other yawns?

Basically yawns exist in order to get groups of social animals on the same sleep schedule. You see a yawn, you yawn and feel tired, and someone else sees, and pretty soon your group is all tired. Do this for a few days and you’ve got a pretty good sleep schedule in your group.
