Edit just to clear up: I don’t have a positive or negative opinion on HOAs. I know next to nothing about them. They’ve just been mentioned to me a few times by family members recently and I asked about aspect I didn’t understand

Because the one benefit to being in an HOA is that at least I know those unreasonable jerkoffs are going to hold my neighbor to the same standards and my neighborhood will look somewhat nice. If my neighbor opts out and I have to live next to a jerk with a jetski planter in the middle of their dirt lot, then why the fuck would I not opt out?
