Why do you have to join an HOA if you buy a home in an HOA neighborhood? Why isn’t there an opt out option?

Edit just to clear up: I don’t have a positive or negative opinion on HOAs. I know next to nothing about them. They’ve just been mentioned to me a few times by family members recently and I asked about aspect I didn’t understand

People don’t seem to get that an HOA is generally just a hyper local government. You can’t opt out of your city or state either

If you know nothing about HOA’s and how they operate, you will be in for a VERY big surprise when you finally read the contract and realize your rights have been usurped by the Karens/Kevins running the HOA and telling you you can only have ‘in season’ plants in your front yard, or some other B.S. .

The HOA provides services, such as security, maintenance of common areas and occasionally breaks on utilities. Why should you get the services provided by the HOA if you refuse to join?

If people started calling them Homeowners’ Unions would Republicans try to outlaw them?

Because the one benefit to being in an HOA is that at least I know those unreasonable jerkoffs are going to hold my neighbor to the same standards and my neighborhood will look somewhat nice. If my neighbor opts out and I have to live next to a jerk with a jetski planter in the middle of their dirt lot, then why the fuck would I not opt out?
