The common chemical in alcoholic drinks is ethanol. When you burn – or combust – ethanol (C2H5OH) in air (which contains oxygen, O2), the final products obtained are carbon dioxide gas (CO2) and water (H2O). Looking at this reaction is important as it produces the same products as does the metabolism of ethanol in the liver,

So when your liver metabolizes alcohol it produces water. It’s not just flushing the alcohol out with water or that it’s a diuretic, but that your body is making water out of the ethanol, and actually making slightly more water than the ethanol that was there, 1:1.17

Your body is pissing out the alcohol with water. The body is essentially using water to move the alcohol to the bladder so it can get it out of the body.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes you to urinate a lot. It does this by suppressing the production of the hormone vasopressin, which normally regulates water excretion.

Because alcohol causes your body to flush water out of your system, which turns into urine, which goes into your bladder, which means you need to use the bathroom.

It’s also the reason why hangovers exist. Dehydration. If people would drink 1 glass of water with each alcoholic drink, they would never have a hangover.
