Why do you need to remove the foil/film layer underneath a plastic lid?

We recently found out that the thin film/foil cover underneath the plastic lid (i.e. cottage cheese, yogurt, etc…) need to be removed once opened to prolong freshness. What is the reason?

My wife tends to open containers and peel back the film and use whatever is in it, then put the lid back on top of the film.

I, seeing that the film is still on, assume it is still sealed and therefore good for a while longer. Meanwhile, its been opened and is starting to go bad. Then one day, I take the container out, take off the lid, peel back the film and find that whatever inside is moldy.

If the film is removed, you can tell, even with the lid on and for me at least, its a reminder to use it first before opening any others.
