The process called “osmosis” tends to equalize salt concentrations either side of semi-permeable membranes like cell walls. In salty water, the internal water molecules will tend to flow out of a cell as it tries to dilute the ocean. Salt water fish have evolved mechanisms to excrete excess salt as the oceans have gradually become more salty over the aeons since life evolved.
