First, I know what you mean. It just does…

But one answer is that it might just be heavier, depending on the polymer dumbbell. I remember weighing some polymer weights I had once and learning they were significantly off their stated weights.

Do you have a set of scales? Those things are often made to appallingly low tolerances and can be way off.

Also, of course, this is a great opportunity to link this https://youtu.be/-fC2oke5MFg classic clip 🙂

Are they identic in terms of gemoetry? I will guess the polymer dumbell might have a thicker handle and the weight center closer to your palm.
It’s like holding a hammer from it’s handle or from the iron side.

I’m not going to discuss iron/polymer, just different dumbbells.

The distribution of the weight matters. Is it more concentrated on one? They changed the balance significantly.

The thickness of the handle. Or any kind of grip/knurling on the handle. Generally thicker handles are harder to grip, making the movement harder.

The quality/accuracy. One might be new, 20kg+/- 0.01kg. the other might be old and bashed and definitely out of calibration.
