Why does a liquid not spill off a straw…?

Why does a liquid not spill when you hold down the upper end of a straw while taking it out of a glass? Hoping that is self explanatory. Thanks.

When you cap it and then pull it out, you are creating a vacuum. A weak one, but enough to hold the liquid, because that volume increase from the straw raising creates suction, whereas if it wasn’t capped the pressure change wouldn’t exist because the volume used by the vacuum is also the space outside of the straw.
