Why does a magic eraser work better than an ordinary sponge?

Just curious, there were some stains on the tile in my bathroom that an ordinary sponge wouldn’t get out, but a magic eraser got rid of with ease!

The surface of a magic eraser is essentially a high grit sandpaper so it works by sanding the surface. You could probably get the same result with a very very fine steel wool. But some surfaces may show scratches because the grit would be lower.

A sponge isn’t abrasive. It works in conjunction with chemicals to clean. So an abrasive chemical like barkeepers friend plus a sponge would have the same (or at least similar) result. But separately the sponge will just wipe the surface.
