It’s essentially very fine sand paper.

You’re sanding the stains off of your sneakers. If you use them for too long/or too aggressively you will ruin the surface you are cleaning.

It’s a micro-abrasive that works by scratching off dirt and stains. It may take a thin layer off of the surface but usually not.

The Magic Eraser is actually melamine foam, which is a very fine abrasive. You can buy a giant pack of melamine foam sponges from Amazon for the price of a two pack of Mr Clean Magic Eraser.

If you like using them; they are just melamine sponges. If you look up melamine sponges online, you will be able to find them for about a 10th of the price of a magic eraser. It’s all just a marketing name that you’re paying for

It’s abrasive rather than chemical.  It sands away anything stuck to the outside and depending on the material also sands off the top layer rather than trying to separate the stains from that layer.  It’s fine enough that there will often be a polishing effect on softer materials, too.

It’s often a lot easier to just mechanically remove something than dissolve it, assuming you have the right tool for that.

Don’t know. Unquestionably the worst cleaning product I’ve ever purchased. Couldn’t clean my stove, shower, or sink. Maybe I’m using it wrong. Just what can I clean with that useless thing?

Just remember that when you wear away a magic eraser, you’re essentially creating plastic dust, which you may be inhaling, or spreading through your home to be inhaled later

They dissolve into trillions of pieces of microplastic when you use them, btw. That was obvious all along but an article pointed it out recently.

Instead of magic eraser, use lemon juice. Most of the grunge is mineralized grime – which the lemon juice cuts through.

The melamine – Mr. Clean thing – is, as everyone says, like sandpaper that scours the surface away. On glass it’s fine.
