I cleaned my son’s white leather Nike sneakers with Folex after he decided to play kickball in them on the last day of school. They were covered in brick dust and grass stains and he thought they were ruined. They looked brand new when I was done.

You can buy Folex on Amazon or at Home Depot. It’s marketed as a “carpet cleaner,” but it’s gentle and works on any fabric or leather. Just spray it on the leather and let it sit for a minute, then wipe it off with a fluffy hand towel. If you need to get into small spaces, use a toothbrush to get in there. It cleans amazingly well, so you don’t have to scrub. You also don’t need to rinse it out. Just wipe it off and let the remainder air dry.

I took the shoelaces out and sprayed them with the Folex, put them in a cup to let them soak for a minute, then rinsed them in water. I squeezed the shoelaces in a dry section of towel between my fingers and pulled the laces through the towel to dry them.

I had a feeling the Folex would do a good job, but to be honest, we were both shocked at how new the shoes looked when I was done.

Never use Melamine on shoes. It doesn’t work as well anyway, and you’re sanding away the leather and rubber.
