Why does a phone’s volume need to be increased to ear-hurting levels for a person to be able to hear a podcast over washing dishes when hearing another person speak live over the same sound is fine?
phone speaker have normally only high frequenzys and not the calming lower ones
when a person speaks it is more natural and not so earscreching.

Sound is a signal via the movement of air. Look at the amount of air that the speaker in you phone can move as opposed to the amount of air a human’s lungs would move to the same sound. The larger amount of air would help override the noise from the washing.

Because people tend to speak in an odd, less precise manner when they read something off a script, which makes their voice harder for the brain to decode than when they speak naturally.
