The top of the head is more sensitive to the male hormones that accelerate baldness. (The hair follicles there simply have more receptors for androgens, men’s sex hormones they produce, so as men age, that’s where the hair loss occurs first.) The sides and very back of the head has way lower sensitivity to androgens so it is spared relative to the front and top of the head, though hair thins throughout the body by the time we reach very old age.
