Rechargeable batteries work by chemical reactions. One reaction produces electricity and feeding in electricity reverses it. For example, a lead acid battery turns lead and sulfuric acid into lead sulfate. Feeding in electricity breaks that down back into lead and acid.

But it doesn’t do it perfectly. Some of the lead sulfate doesn’t break down and the battery thus loses some capacity. Eventually, the battery won’t have enough capacity left to do what you need it to do and you need to replace it.

It depends on what type it is.

In some you accumulate crystal errors (lithium), others corrode (lead-acid) and so on
