Why does an ear piercing sometimes migrate lower and lower on the earlobe?

I’ve seen an ear piercing that started out in the middle of the lobe and ended up working it’s way down so it looked like it was just held in by a thin bit of skin. Why and how does that happen?

Gravity. The weight of the piercing pulls it down, stretching the hole down a bit, and then small piercing holes can heal up in the space that was left.

Simple answer is gravity; the heavier the earring, the more weight bearing down on the earlobe, resulting in it stretching.

People who are saying gravity are right, but it’s not just that.

It’s a combination of really heavy hoop earrings, with very thin wire to go through the ear.

For 15-18 years I wore some heavyish hoops, but I also wore thick hoops. Like 2-3mm, rather than 0.2-0.3mm. It makes all the difference.

Mine never migrated, as the weight over the surface area was much much lower.

Interesting question. I wonder if skin “tightening” cream would slow that process at all or if the damage is just done. I have seen this and my own is getting saggy lol as I age. I recently stopped wearing any earrings that hang but I’m old. What can you do. Nothing probably. Just stop wearing them before they rip all the way through I guess 🤷‍♀️
