Why does an ear piercing sometimes migrate lower and lower on the earlobe?

I’ve seen an ear piercing that started out in the middle of the lobe and ended up working it’s way down so it looked like it was just held in by a thin bit of skin. Why and how does that happen?

Gravity. The weight of the piercing pulls it down, stretching the hole down a bit, and then small piercing holes can heal up in the space that was left.
