Why does an ear piercing sometimes migrate lower and lower on the earlobe?

I’ve seen an ear piercing that started out in the middle of the lobe and ended up working it’s way down so it looked like it was just held in by a thin bit of skin. Why and how does that happen?

Simple answer is gravity; the heavier the earring, the more weight bearing down on the earlobe, resulting in it stretching.
