Why does chronic inflammation impair immunity?

Inflammation is an immune response, so if someone experiences chronic inflammation (ie chronic activation of the immune system) shouldn’t they have more reactive immunity?

Everything I can find just says that chronic inflammation can cause “a breakdown of immune tolerance”. BUT WHY??

Chronic inflammation is when something is triggering an inflammation response constantly for years. Like plaque in the arteries. Your immune system isn’t able to solve the issue, so it fights it for years, leading to worsening symptoms and even potentially death from some system failure.

Your immune system would certainly be weakened from waging a years long war, and immunity is really the wrong word for what it is. It’s more like a resistance, and what kind of resistance can you expect when it’s off causing heart disease because of constant inflammation triggers?
