Why does dead weight feel heavier than “regular” weight even when the weight is the same? (E.g. my 50 pound little cousin is easier to lift than a 50 pound barbell plate)

Its about balance and stability. Your cousin is actively working to balance. They shift around to center their weight over whatever you are supporting them with (hand, arm, hip  whatever). A dead weight is not. All the balancing/shifting/moving is on you.

You probably also have a better grip (under the arms), versus having to clamp around the edge of the plate (assuming no handle opening).
