Why does durian stink so much?

They stink to us, because most people find the odor of those chemical compounds disagreeable. There’s nothing inherently good or bad about a specific odor, only how it’s perceived in our brain.
However, those same smells are intensely attractive to certain animals, who are lured in to eat the fruit and excrete the seeds, thus propagating the plant’s offspring.
