Why does everything get much louder when your ears ‘pop’?

The difference in pressure on your eardrums interferes with it vibrating freely. Imagine two drums. With one you strike it normally and with the other you push down the face with one hand while striking it with the other.

My follow up question would be: Why do I no longer experience this since becoming an adult? I remember when I would yawn as a child, my ears would pop and everything would pretty much double in loudness. Can’t remember the last time I experienced that sensation other than maybe on an airplane.
