From what I understand, fake jewellery is usually made from cheaper metals like copper, nickel or zinc. These can be painted, clad or coated to look like the metal they are trying to imitate but are often done poorly. More often than not, people experience a rash or a reaction with either the base metal or salts that form. For instant, copper can react with sulphur to form copper sulphides and more notably copper (II) sulphate is an irritant
