– Why does food seem to affect your stomach so quickly when it takes multiple hours to digest?

After eating or drinking something that affects your digestive system, think coffee and a big breakfast, why does it only seem to take 10 or 15 minutes to affect your stomach and cause a trip to the bathroom? On average I think it takes food about 4 to 6 hours to be passed through, so why does it hit so quickly?

Well if you’re talking about getting sick, it’s your body that creates the sickness reaction not the food itself. So your body can do that pretty quickly after just sensing what’s in there. It doesn’t need to digest the food in order to react to it.

Food goes to your stomach first, immediately. Most digestion actually happens in the intestines and colon after leaving the stomach.
