Why does food taste better when you’re hungry?

Yesterday I forgot to eat for several hours (blaming my ADHD for this) and my blood sugar plummeted so much that my hands started shaking. I reached for the nearest sweet thing and it was a cone of butterscotch ice cream. Now I am not a huge fan of butterscotch ice cream but damn if that wasn’t the best butterscotch ice cream I’d ever tasted.

Then it occurred to me that this happens with almost all food items when I’m really hungry. So why does food automatically become more delicious when I’m starving? Is it related to saliva secretion?

Your body craves certain things it needs to survive, and each type of taste (sweet, salty, savoury) represents one or more of those things (sugar, salt, protein/fat)

Your body tends to reward you for doing things that are good for you. Nutrient intake = yum! Hydrating youself = thirst gone, refreshing! This even works on a higher, species-wide level. You’re having sex (procreating) = all the good feels.
