Why does getting an eyelash in your eye feel awful when it happens when you’re awake, but you don’t feel anything when you wake up with one in your eye?

I’ve continually noticed that when I wake up with an eyelash in my eye, I don’t notice until I’m putting in my contacts and actually see it. But when I get an eyelash in my eye while I’m awake, it feels like there’s definitely something in my eye. Why is that?
