Why does Google always show that there are way more results on a search than there actually are?

Google says that this got 22 billion results, but there are only about 260 results.

At the bottom of the last page, Google says:

>In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 255 already displayed.
If you like, you can [repeat the search with the omitted results included](https://www.google.com/search?q=how+many+web+pages+are+there&biw=1998&bih=1100&filter=0).

If you follow that link, you can see up to 1000 results.

Google never shows more than 1000 results, but you can refine the query in order to see more of those results.
