There is a little structure inside your ear called labyrinth that is a series of tubes with gel inside and some little calcium Peebles.

Along the walls there are sensors that will tell your brain which surface the Peebles are touching and so you know which side is “down” (since gravity will pull the little ‘peebles’ down) thus giving you a reference for your balance.

Now, if you hold your ear you get an extra reference for that whole system and thus it helps your brain define precisely which way is down especially if you are shaking a little (like trying to balance yourself over a ball)
