why does in accidents or disaster, the medical people will give blankets to victims that are silver? What does this silver blanket do?

When I did my first aid course, the instructor got me to lie on the floor and covered me with a Mylar emergency blanket. Within a few seconds I was feeling quite warm and in a minute or two I was starting to get too hot. They work really well.
