I understand that when anything gets in a wound, it hurts, but why does alcohol hurt so much more than if I poked it with my finger?

Ethanol, the alcohol chemical, messes with with heat pain receptors in your skin.

When exposed to alcohol, those receptors put out the same chemicals they do when they respond to heat.

Which is why rubbing alcohol on a cut gives it a “burning” sensation.
