Why does it hurt when you can’t start/finish a sneeze?

This has happened to me literally all my life and I’ve always wondered why. I understand the anatomy of the nose and face quite well (I’m a nurse) and I understand why/how we sneeze but not how it can translate to pain if your sneeze is otherwise hindered.

Not a doctor, but a biomedical researcher with functioning physiology background. If I had to guess I’d say that maybe air was getting trapped in the Eustachian tube or something like that, and that the increase in air pressure causes a painful sensation. Far from sure, though.

E: this would apply to being hindered mid-sneeze.
