Why does it sometimes burn when you put lotion on dry skin?

Sometimes, lotion on dry skin feels great. Other times it burns and irritates. Why?

When you have dry skin sometimes it cracks. Most Lotion has alcohol in it so when you put it on you feel the alcohol burn in the cracks of your dry skin.
