How is this a thing when there are conditions that could likely get drastically worse in between the symptoms showing and the actual appointment date? And also people getting no assurance it’s not something life threatening causing extra anxiety and stress?
I have no expertise in economics or the medical industry so I’d appreciate any insights.

Where do you live? If it’s in a country with universal healthcare, then those are infamously known for long wait times, in the order of years even. A combination of having an enormous amount of patients (the whole country) and being government owned and operated, with all the bureaucracy and inefficiency that entails
If you live in the US, then I’m really not sure, usually it should be pretty dang fast
