It seems like something that, on paper, should be very easy to accomplish. Is it just down to the fact that certain things cannot be translated directly from one language to another?

Language translation is super hard. Language is a dynamic system, and different people who “speak the same language” would translate some things differently. Even in English, we have poetry and prose with no real scheme to translate between them.
