why does light therapy work for SAD.

Basically what the title says. How does using a therapy lamp help with seasonal depression? I know it has something to do with circadian rhythm, but beyond that I can’t seem to grasp it.

The biggest difference between summer and winter is the amount of sunlight available.

As such, if you can replace that sunlight with artificial sunlight, that contains all the right wavelengths (for both the special cells in the eyes that set our circadian rhythm and the skin cells that produce vitamin D) then *theoretically* it should fix all the problems.

It doesn’t seem to work for everyone, but it does seem to work for some people – so that theory is clearly incomplete, but may well be part of the picture.
