Why does loneliness cause physical ailments?

Recently I came across this article that spending extended periods of time alone is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. If this is true, how does it really work? What are the physiological implications of loneliness that causes such detrimental effects not only to the mind, but also the body?

Humanity is an oldschool game. You can attempt to play it solo, but it’s much, much harder. You really need to join a party to make it enjoyable and advance your character. Joining a party gives you increased HP, STR, INT and you gain XP faster. But aside from buffs, it also lowers your chances of being killed by other players or NPC mobs. It’s not that you can’t solo for a while, but if you solo too long you will end up incurring debuffs that reduce INT and HP and adds panic and confusion. Basically it’s the game’s way of pushing people to the party play format. It’s how it was designed to be played.
