why does lowering your chin enable you to produce deeper sounds?

Whenever I (as a woman) want to imitate a man I find I instinctually lower my chin to make my voice lower. I’ve seen that professional singers such as opera singers do it too maybe to help control particularly low notes.

How does this help physiologically?

Sounds come from your vocal chords.

High pitched sounds come when you pull your vocal chords tight Low pitched sounds come when your vocal chords are loose. This is controlled by certain muscles in your neck/throat.

When you rich your chin down, you stretch out your neck/throat less, meaning you’re able to get your vocal chords a bit looser.
