Why does no sound come out of earbuds if you take off the rubber tips?

It depends on your earbuds, but, in general, sound should still come out. It’s just hard to hear when the rubber isn’t there to block all the other noises around you.
It actually still does. But without the rubber bits, it’s hard to get the earbud positioned just right so that the sound goes into your ear canal. The rubber tips also help block out external noise that might make it harder to hear.
