Why does only nose breathing produce nitric oxide?

1.32K views

I was reading about the differences between mouth and nose breathing, and it seems that nitric oxide is beneficial to cardiovascular health, but that only breathing through one’s nose produces it. I couldn’t seem to find a simple explanation for it.

Edit to add: I thought this was a genuine question about something I didn’t understand but wanted to. So much(passive) aggression in the comments. Apologies. I was just trying to learn.

Nitric oxide (NO) causes blood vessels to dilate. This is important in people with pulmonary hypertension. It’s the reason Viagra was originally created (to treat pulmonary HTN and is still used for this) but it also has the side effect of causing boners. Viagra doesn’t increase NO but it affects enzymes in the NO pathway prolonging and enhancing the effects of NO. Also nitric oxide NO sould not be confused with nitrous oxide N2O aka laughing gas. If you get them confused you’re gonna have a good time.
