why does pain make you exhausted?

Is it the feeling of pain or is it the thing that is making the pain? My example is fibromyalgia where there is extreme pain/cramping. Is the thing causing the cramping and pain making me exhausted or the constant feeling of pain?

Cramping is your muscle contracting uncontrollably. You don’t have control over it, but it still takes energy to contract. That energy use can be tiring.

Pain from injuries can feel exhausting because your body spends energy healing the injuries that cause the pain. That can be exhausting as well.

There’s also a mental cost to pain. Feel a lot of pain, or a little for a long time, is draining. It can cause exhaustion, but it’s more like depression than workout exhaustion.
