Why does Papaya grow with a long inner cavity inside?

Hi everyone, I’m doing design research on papayas as a system and plan to pull from the fruit’s biology to inspire new designs. Can someone explain why papayas grow the way they do?

That’s where the seeds are. Like a cantaloupe or pumpkin. Fruit is the seeds surrounded by fleshy pulp of some kind. They all grow in a big cluster, so them being narrow and long can fit more in the same area.
