Why does parts of your skin, which become hard, take a really long time to become soft again

e.g if you’re a golfer, the hand without the glove tends to develop really hard patches of skin that seemingly never go away.

Dead skin doesn’t change. Once the top layer dries out, unless it’s removed mechanically (through friction) or chemically stays there. If you continue applying the same pressure repeatedly, the layers underneath will continue to harden to protect the rest of the skin.

Those are called calluses, and they happen to people who work a lot with their hands. This is just a result of your skin getting harder so it doesn’t stretch and cause blisters. After a long time of not doing that activity, your hands realize it no longer needs to be firm, so it goes back to its natural state, but it usually takes a few months for this to happen.
