Why does perception of a face differ from person to person?

Recently my friends and I got into an argument as to who Tom Pelphrey resembled more: Keanu Reeves or Fred Armisen. I said he resembled Fred Armisen but almost everyone else in my friend group said Keanu. This is not a standalone incident as I’ve found that even in case of people I’ve known for sometime, I perceive faces a bit differently than others. What could be the cause?

It’s kind of a bias in comparison. You dress people in similar styles taken in similar styles, you’re going to see similarities. When reality when you take the time to look at all three actors, and their previous styles. They all look nothing alike.

Consider how hard it has been for computers to learn to recognize faces compared to humans.

We’re trained from infancy to look for specific patterns in a human face and come to a conclusion. Nobody really tells us which parts of the face to look at. We each figure it out, and we don’t necessarily arrive at the same answer, just one that works.

Since most of the learning happens inside each person’s own head, it’s natural that you and your friends would come to different conclusions.

EDIT: or maybe I’m just bad with faces; who knows lol

I think another factor is that some people focus on other people’s eyes, and some focus on mouths. If you’re watching tv, especially on a large screen, try changing your focus that way and you might be surprised how people look different.
