Why does post partum depression exist and what causes it?

In some extreme cases, the mother doesn’t even want to see the child because they feel they might harm it. Why does our body do this, isn’t it counterproductive seeing as our body should be telling us to protect the baby and not harm it?

The honest truth is that we don’t know the causes. If we did then we could be developing ways to treat it better. But the truth of the matter is that we don’t know what causes depression in the first place. We thought we did but it turns out we were wrong.
