Why does rain seem to fall all at once in storms and not just slowly drip down a few drops at the time throughout a day?

Many years ago I lived for a couple of years on Guam, where there are notably just two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. As I recall, in the dry season it rained about an hour a day, late in the afternoon, while in the rainy season you had lengthy showers all day long. I think this is pretty common on tropical islands. What causes this tropical rainfall pattern?
